In 2000, the Yoga Grove
opened on Grand Ave, in the heart of Coconut Grove. It was a beautiful
little spot right next to the Last Carrot, where students and teachers
shared many a meal. The yoga studio was on the ground floor, and
right outside the classroom door we had all the best of the Grove's
characters to entertain us: singing drunken bicyclists, wandering
dogs, pedestrians and curious onlookers of varying intention.
The front door would fall off every once in a while, and we had an
unruly parking lot attendant whose screaming antics would often
coincide with savasana. It all sounds funny now. A lot has
changed. The original Yoga Grove was solely dedicated to the
Ashtanga Yoga System, with all classes taught in the style of the
founders' revered guru, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Since then the
studio has changed hands, the line-up of teachers has grown, and the
schedule has expanded to include several yoga styles. In early
2003, the Yoga Grove moved to its current location at 31st & US1, in
the Academy Building. Suzi Page came on board as Marisa
Gallardo's
partner that same year, and was co-director of Yoga Grove until she
died of cancer in January, 2005. We miss her dearly.
